Fifty-Two Awards Presented, Matt Markel Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Omaha (Jan. 24, 2010) – The talents of more than 50 local individuals and/or groups were celebrated and recognized at the Fourth Annual Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs.

The winners, as indicated below, were competing against nominees selected last year by both the public and a juried panel in each of the arts areas.

The evening also featured the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to Matt Markel. Markel is best known for bringing national musical acts to Omaha at the former Ranch Bowl Entertainment Center, and for supporting local acts just starting their musical careers.

The OEA Awards is an annual contest that celebrates the creativity and performances of local musicians, artists, directors, actors and other Omaha-area performers.

Live entertainment was also part of the evening, including nominee performances by slam poet Katie F-S; musical acts After the Fall, Brad Hoshaw & the Seven Deadlies, The Black Squirrels with Matt Cox, and Lucas Kellison with Jamazz and El Genius; along with a scene from Creighton University’s production of “Westside Story.”

Radio personality Ethan Stone, who most recently co-hosted the morning show on 96.1 The Brew, served as emcee. For the past 10 years Stone has worked on-air in Omaha radio, making stops at Bob FM, Retro 106.9 and 99.9 KGOR. He also has hosted the area’s only televised talent show, “Harrah’s Fame and Fortune.” Prior to his arrival in Omaha, the Pennsylvania native also worked in Charlotte, N.C., and Denver, Colo.

Media sponsor WOWT recorded the awards show at the Mid-America Center and will broadcast it at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 on WOWT (Cox channel 8).

More than 4,000 individual nominations were received for this year’s OEA Awards. The top online vote-getter in each of the 40-plus subcategories received an automatic nomination. Four other nominees were determined by a juried panel in each of the arts areas.

Hot Shops Welcomes Visual Arts Nominees

Works by this year’s Visual Arts Nominees are on display at the Hot Shops Art Center, 1301 Nicholas St., through Saturday, Jan. 30.

The nominated visual artists whose work is on display at Hot Shops are: Claudia Alvarez, Jess Benjamin, Scott Blake, Jamie Burmeister, Julie Conway, Joel Damon/Unwashed, Larry Ferguson, Doug Hayko, Andrew Hershey, Natalie Linstrom, Susan McGilvrey, Troy Muller, Kristin Pluhacek, Mike Scheef, Bill Sitzmann, Iggy Sumnik, Susann Suprenant/Aetherplough, Nolan Tredway and Watie White.
